Canyon Concierto Maestro Romayne Wheeler

Pianist, Composer, Artist, and Poet

Romayne Wheeler, a native of California, began to write music at the age of seven. He spent 14 years of his childhood in Central America due to his parent's work, orienting his style of composition toward the Latin American folklore with its bright affirmative melodies and multiple rhythms. After graduating from the Monterrey Bay Academy, Wheeler studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and at the Vienna Conservatory of Music. He has performed on the piano in many of the great concert halls of the world, and eventually he knew there had to be more to life than just becoming a musical robot. The New York Times, in an article on Wheeler, described how the impulse to get away from it all brought him, and eventually his grand piano, to the cliff-side dwelling he now calls home. Wheeler hired a dump truck, lined it with 15 mattresses and innumerable potato sacks, and slowly hauled out his 1917 Steinway & Sons grand piano. It took 17 hours to go the 80 miles from Creel, but miraculously, the piano arrived without a scratch. He has lived in Cerro Colorado on the rim of Batopilas Canyon since the early 1980s.

The Tarahumaras at first kept away from the huge black Steinway, but as soon as Wheeler started to play, they came to listen to his "water music," so named they say because it sounded like water, which they regard as the most precious of all the elements. Wheeler's poetry is about nature and about the Tarahumara, and he recites it in poetically lyrical English and Spanish. Some of Romayne's compositions are also about nature and the Tarahumara with titles like Danza de las Mariposas and Danza de Matachines. He plays Chopin, Mendelssohn, Mousssorgsky, and Gershwin, and favorites such as Recuerdos del Alhambra by Tarrega and Intermezzo by Ponce. As a tour leader, Romayne Wheeler will perform his music and recite his poetry for an educational and rewarding presentation.
