Copper Canyon, Mexico- Sierra Madre Explorations


	Canyon Travel recently acquired a 1950 Pullman Standard Passenger Railcar modified with a 20-foot open deck. The open deck design allows the traveler to experience this spectacular railway better than in any dome or passenger railcar and it is excellent for taking photographs and for shooting video. The railcar is always attached at the rear of the first class Chihuahua Pacific train and offers complete privacy from the first class passengers. The passengers in the first class train must stand in the small crowded vestibules between the train cars to feel even a small measure of what our passengers experience. Our travelers sit on deck chairs, sip on top-shelf margaritas and snack on fresh ceviche.
	Bill Wallace, who will serve as train master on our trips, modified the rail car. Bill at one time had 11 railcars operating in Mexico and he brings his vast expertise to our operations. The railcar operates over the best segment of the railway and has been recently upgraded and mechanically serviced by Ferromex, owner-operator of the railroad, at their rail yard in Chihuahua City.

Chihuahua al Pacifio Railroad
The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad passenger service traverses 408 miles through some of the most scenic wilderness on Earth, from the Sonoran-Sinaloan transition tropical forest; it then climbs 8,000 ft. into the Western Sierra Madre and skirts the Copper Canyon, before terminating in the Chihuahuan Desert. This spectacular railway achievement required 37 principle bridges, the longest is 1,638 ft. and the highest is 335 ft. It bores through 87 tunnels, one tunnel is 5,965 ft. long and another tunnel has a 180 degree turn followed by a bridge with a 90 degree turn. The railway, with nearly 11 miles of tunneling and 2.25 miles of bridging, serpentines through some of the most biologically outstanding and diverse habitats on the planet, listed in the world's 200 most crucial areas for conservation.

Every day since 1961, El Chepe (as this unique train is familiarly called), ventures into the imposing landscapes of the Sierra Tarahumara. This route is regarded as one of the most important in the world and one of the master pieces of Mexican Engineering.

In order to provide passengers with a world class service, Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex), owner of the CHEPE train, initiated in 1998 the rehabilitation of the railway and the Express First Class railcars. The most modern and comfortable passenger train in Mexico will afford you the most memorable ecotourism experience in the country.
